First Day of School Tips to Calm the Jitters
The best way to calm first-day-of-school nerves is to make the unfamiliar familiar: visit the school ahead of time, practice the routine, and let your child pack their own backpack so they feel in control.
Before the first day
- Do a practice run. Walk or drive the route, and visit the school or playground if you can.
- Set up the routine early. Move bedtime and wake-up back a few days ahead.
- Let them choose their gear. A backpack they picked builds excitement and ownership.
- Pack together the night before. Use our supplies checklist by grade so nothing is forgotten.
The morning of
- Keep breakfast simple and get up with time to spare.
- Keep goodbyes short and confident - long goodbyes make nerves worse.
- Pack a lunch they love. A familiar favorite in the lunch box is a small comfort in a big day.
After school
Ask open questions (what made you laugh today?) instead of yes-or-no ones. Celebrate that they did it.
Every Fenrici backpack and lunch box gives back to pediatric rare-disease research, so the first day helps other kids too.
