Back-to-School Supplies Checklist by Grade
Here is a simple back-to-school supplies checklist by grade. Always check your school's specific list first, then use this as a starting point for what goes in the backpack.
The basics every grade needs
- A backpack sized to your child
- An insulated lunch box and a water bottle
- A reusable bento box for packed lunches
Preschool and kindergarten
- Change of clothes, comfort item, folder, glue sticks, crayons, safety scissors, and a nap mat if required
Grades 1 to 3
- Pencils, erasers, crayons or colored pencils, glue, scissors, folders, a wide-ruled notebook, and a pencil box
Grades 4 to 5
- Pencils and pens, highlighters, a binder with dividers, notebooks, a ruler, and a tablet or Chromebook (look for a padded compartment)
Middle school
- A laptop and charger, binders per subject, a planner, a calculator, a combination lock, and gym clothes
Backpack tips
Keep the loaded backpack under 10 to 15 percent of your child's body weight (here is why) and pick the right size for their grade. A matching set covers the backpack and lunch box in one step.
